I find that people are the most fascinating subjects. I relate to the emotional expressions captured in color and light, and I see a comforting continuity in the history that has been captured by artists throughout the centuries. The trappings of life change, but the human element remains constant. Capturing that humanity is the essence of portraiture.
Photographs distort the image, but working with a subject in person gives Daniel the opportunity to study the delicate shifts of color and form in the ever-changing light. For painting on canvas Daniel prefers oil paint. For works on paper he uses watercolor, pencil, charcoal, or a mix of media. All his subjects are captured life-sized, however the size of the final piece depends upon how much of the subject is captured.
